Tips For Safeguarding Your Cyber System

Ugh. Your computer isn’t working and you have no idea why.

We’ve all been there. Even the person who is the smartest “computer person” that you know, has had trouble. No shame! Tech is new and totally difficult, despite the term “digital native,” no one is actually born inherently knowing how to use a computer. A common comparison to learning the ins and outs of a computer is learning a second language.

Don’t get too frustrated. Be patient with yourself and with the computer, it’s thinking and working as hard as you! Now, let’s do some troubleshooting.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Computers

Much like pets, computers slowly become a part of our everyday life and different people will choose different computers based on their needs and environment. If you live in an apartment with no yard, you’re probably more likely to get a terrier rather than a St. Bernard. If you run a small business, you’re more likely to use a cloud-based computing system rather than create a build server farm.

In fact, for entrepreneurs and small businesses in 2019, computers are crucial to their success. With that in mind, let’s talk about some of the most common cybersecurity that businesses lack.

Cyber Security

As more and more of our personal and professional lives meld, mingle, and migrate to the digital world, security becomes more and more important. Unfortunately, being secure online isn’t nearly as easy as locking a door or putting a dowel behind your window.

Let’s take a quick moment to talk about basic cybersecurity. If you have not yet safeguarded your computer systems — personal or professional — here are some very basic, easy security measures to implement as soon as possible.

Need Computer Help

Strengthen your passwords

All passwords should be unique to each site/account, at least 8 characters, and an arbitrary (to anyone other than the user) combination of upper case, lower case, numbers, and special characters.

Helpful Hint: Choose a phrase that means something to you personally and then substitute letters. For example, maybe you went to Europe after graduation. Your password could be something like: “parisproposalwithwine”. Now substitute special characters that look similar: “Pari5pr0p0s@lw!thW!ne”. Gorgeous!

Backup the data

Create a schedule and backup everyone’s data frequently to a secure third party location.

Protective software

This will keep malware and other viruses from attacking your system.

Awareness & Removable Devices

Educate your staff and yourself on what sites/downloads are verified as safe. Also, implement a policy against, or monitored/restricted use of foreign removable devices (such as disks, USBs, or other). This is one of the easiest ways to accidentally subject your system to malicious programs.
