What Is the Cloud?

Why Is Cloud Storage Important or Useful?

“The Cloud” is a pretty ambiguous word that is shared around the globe. The world seems to understand how the cloud can be useful, yet most don’t understand what it is, where it is, and how it is powered. In the IT industry, software developers can describe the cloud in a different way than perhaps a system administrator would. However, though different people may have different ways of interpreting the definition of the cloud, many agree that it is an internet-based service that helps store and manage user information.

What is the Cloud?

The cloud refers specifically to a range of services that a user can access via an internet connection, where that is with browsers on a computer, using a smartphone, or utilizing an app. Providers, such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and so on, offer users many different cloud-based services for a subscription and monthly dues. For instance, if you would like to use iCloud, you will have to pay monthly installments to keep your storage setting. With a subscription, you can manage what is being saved in your personal cloud and how much storage you would like for your “account.” For instance, if you take many photos that you would like to keep and have backed up, opting for a large amount of cloud storage is recommended.

Cloud Services: What Are They

As per our example, cloud users can use the cloud service to store just about anything. There is a wide range of cloud services available, such as Messaging, Content Management, Social Computing, Collaboration, Identity Management, Storage, Customer Relations Management (CRM), the list goes on.

Ways Cloud-Based Services Are Used

There are many ways that cloud-based services can be consumed by the populace. There are three distinct ways to use cloud services

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  • Software as a Service (SaaS)

Stay tuned to our blogs, as we will go into depth about these three ways to utilize cloud services.

Why Does The Cloud Matter?

Though the cloud can be used by individuals to manage their data, messages, and anything else they save to the cloud, there are other uses to the cloud as well. The cloud can be implemented on a massive scale for businesses to use as well. Anything digital content that a company produces can be saved and stored in the cloud. Better still, if there is a system-wide shutdown, the cloud ensures that no data is lost. For many companies, the difference between thriving and closing down is whether data can be reliably saved, even when something goes wrong.
